{"id":378,"date":"2012-07-05T18:50:20","date_gmt":"2012-07-05T17:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raidengland.org\/?page_id=378"},"modified":"2012-11-04T13:05:37","modified_gmt":"2012-11-04T12:05:37","slug":"joining-instructions-2012","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.raidengland.org\/?page_id=378","title":{"rendered":"2012 Joining Instructions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Wednesday 1st August 2012 &#8211; arrangements<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>How to get to Woolverstone Marina:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nWhether approaching from London or the Midlands you will end up just South of Ipswich\u00a0on the A14.<\/p>\n<p>At junction 56 (signed A 137 to Ipswich &amp; Manningtree) head off towards\u00a0Ipswich.<\/p>\n<p>Down the hill to the first Roundabout, take the second exit signed to Shotley (B1456).<\/p>\n<p>About 3 miles down this road, you will enter Woolverstone, and after maybe \u00bd mile,\u00a0see a sign to the left for Woolverstone marina.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Where to launch\/ check in:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><br \/>\nAs you drive down the marina road, the first thing you will come to is the Royal Harwich\u00a0Yacht Club (RHYC).<\/p>\n<p>Keep going around the corner, into the marina, and the slip is on the\u00a0right. There will be someone there to meet you and give you the welcome pack.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>When to launch:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The slip is usable +\/- 3 hours on high water (which is 12 noon that day) so aim to launch\u00a0between 9am and 3pm.<\/p>\n<p>If you are later than this, then you&#8217;ll need to drive down to Shotley\u00a0marina, launch off the beach there, and round into the lock \u2013 see below. It really is worth\u00a0trying to be in time to use the slip!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>What to do with your trailer:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can leave your trailers (bring a lock) on the approach road to the marina \u2013 please not\u00a0in the marina car park or the RHYC car park.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>What to do with your boat once launched:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While getting trailers &amp; cars etc sorted you can go alongside either the MDL marina or\u00a0the RHYC marina \u2013 we&#8217;ll advise on the day.<\/p>\n<p>Once you are sorted, there is all tide access\u00a0to Shotley so you can head straight down there or do a bit of exploring or stay up at\u00a0Woolverstone or whatever you would like to do.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>What to do with your car:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For the campers, the options will be to leave it at Woolverstone, the campsite, or at\u00a0Shotley Marina. The latter is likely to be strong favourite.<br \/>\nWe will be running a shuttle to move drivers and camping gear between Woolverstone and\u00a0Shotley.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Where you can get food etc during the day:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The marina facilities will be available at Woolverstone (Butterman&#8217;s bar, chandleries etc)\u00a0and at Shotley (where we will have use of all the facilities including showers etc). Also the\u00a0RHYC clubhouse will be open for visitors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>How to get to the campsite:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The campsite is a field below the Shotley Caravan Park, Gate Farm Road, Shotley, IP9 1QH. \u00a0I&#8217;ll give you detailed directions on check-in.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that it is listed as no\u00a0tents and no children, I did persuade the man that for a few days tents and children will be\u00a0OK, but we will have to be on slightly best behaviour!<br \/>\nIt is a short walk from the marina. \u00a0 I have arranged for loos to be installed on site, and we\u00a0have the use of marina facilities for washing etc.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>How to get into Shotley Marina:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You need to lock in &amp; out (Ch 80 for the lock master) and there is a waiting pontoon just\u00a0outside the lock. \u00a0Even for shallow draught boats, it is worth finding (and using) the leading\u00a0marks and channel!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Where &amp; when we first meet up:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll doubtless bump into each other through the day, but the first actual meeting time will\u00a0be in the upstairs function room of the \u201cShipwreck\u201d for supper at 19.00. \u00a0 I&#8217;m hoping we can\u00a0also use that room as a base and meeting point.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Food:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You shouldn\u2019t need to bring any food with you unless you\u2019re very hungry. Most of the\u00a0money is going to provide breakfast, lunch and supper from Wednesday evening through\u00a0to Sunday breakfast, and I hope you\u2019ll find it enjoyable and good value. \u00a0Please let me\u00a0know of any special dietary requirements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Safety:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As with previous raids we should try to manage all our safety issues ourselves. Many\u00a0rallies have no safety boats at all, relying entirely on the prudence and skill of the skippers\u00a0and crews. \u00a0That will be the most important contributor to safety.<\/p>\n<p>However there will be 1 or 2 support boats which will called on variously to be tugs, ferries,\u00a0sheep dogs and (though I hope not often, if at all) safety boats. \u00a0But it is the skippers and\u00a0crews of the boats themselves, who will take the moment-by-moment decisions which take\u00a0them into danger, or away from it, and in most cases solve the problems which arise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Equipment:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure your craft will be properly equipped for the Raid, but the following are essential;<br \/>\n\u2022 Lifejacket \/ Buoyancy aid for all crew members<br \/>\n\u2022 Suitable clothing<br \/>\n\u2022 Vessel \u2014 positive buoyancy<br \/>\n\u2022 Painter, spare line and bailer<br \/>\n\u2022 Means of signalling distress \u2013 an inshore flare pack (not too pricey from discount\u00a0mail order chandleries) is a good idea<br \/>\n\u2022 Anchor and ground tackle<br \/>\n\u2022 Fenders<br \/>\n\u2022 Secondary Propulsion<br \/>\n\u2022 a handheld VHF is not essential but would be helpful<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Charts:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have obtained a copy for each of you of the very good Harwich Harbour Association\u00a0guide which has tidal and shipping information with a \u201cchart\u201d. It says not to be used for\u00a0navigation, but you would not be surprised to discover how often it is used for that.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll get\u00a0it to you by post in the next few days so you can decide whether you need anything more. \u00a0Perhaps the most significant difference between that and a proper chart is the detail on\u00a0depths, so if you don&#8217;t mind the odd encounter with putty you&#8217;ll be OK.<\/p>\n<p>The next option is Imray Y16 which covers the whole area, plus the Deben. It is printed on\u00a0water-resistant paper, and costs around \u00a316.00.<\/p>\n<p>For even more detail there are the East\u00a0Coast Rivers guide books. \u00a0Interesting, but not essential.<\/p>\n<p>In any event I&#8217;ll be providing notes for each day&#8217;s expedition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Responsibility \u2013 the legal bit:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Raid England shall not be liable for any loss, damage, death or personal injury howsoever\u00a0caused to the Owner\/Skipper or crew, as a result of their taking part in the Event. \u00a0Moreover, every Owner\/Skipper warrants the suitability of his boat for the Event.<\/p>\n<p>The safety of a boat and her entire management including insurance shall be the sole\u00a0responsibility of the Owner\/ Skipper, who must ensure that the boat is fully found,\u00a0thoroughly seaworthy, manned by a crew sufficient in number and experience who are\u00a0physically fit to face bad weather.<\/p>\n<p>The Owner\/Skipper must be satisfied as to the soundness of the hull, spars, rigging and all\u00a0gear. \u00a0He must ensure that all safety equipment is properly maintained, stowed and in date\u00a0and that the crew know where it is kept and how it is to be used.<\/p>\n<p>Neither the establishment of these conditions, nor their use by Raid England, in any way\u00a0limits the absolute responsibility of the Owner\/ Skipper.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Money \u2013 the nasty bit:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have sent\/am sending you all an invoice based on your last known position, which I&#8217;m\u00a0sure you will correct if I have it wrong.
